Layoff

At the beginning of a movie I was watching there was a scene of someone who received a surprise layoff and, after being escorted outside the office building, did not seem to have any idea what to do.
(I don’t know what happened to that character at this moment of writing as I have yet to continue with the movie.)

Which prompted me to ponder: when at last we leave our jobs, what has to be left behind and what we can bring with us? Thinking ahead of this eventuality can clarify our priority about what is really important: titles and positions we hold, colleagues/collaborators we interacted with, experiences we learned, products we built, achievements we accomplished, etc.

Now, replace job with life, and think again.

My colleague Jose Echevarria took this photo on 2020 Aug 14 in Zaragoza, of a flower shop which almost spelled my name and inspired me to create this motion graphics via web animation.

I did some quick drawings on my moto-x4 mobile phone at a great exhibition of Gordon Parks this early Saturday afternoon, and an inspired motion graphics afterwards at home.

I smelled dog poop when watering plants outside tonight, but it was too dark to spot the source.
Waiting until the next morning can provide better visibility, but then the smell may have dried out.

I was trying to draw a blood flow animation, but it did not look satisfactory to me and thus produced a quick splatter variation.

Autarky and innovation

A major tech company would like to own an entire meta-verse platform from hardware (servers, HMDs) to software (standards, libraries, applications), and plans to start reproducing the capabilities of existing components.
This sounds less innovative/fun than building on top of what is already out there (e.g., existing hardware and libraries), and innovation benefits more from collaboration than isolation, aside from the purpose of learning/experimentation (like this guy building chips in his parents’ garage).

SaaS and sanctions

A cloud-based software or data storage can be switched off at any moment to deny access to anyone, and is harder to pirate or circumvent than software sold as digital copies.
