Highly recommend. I particularly like the part about advices won’t prevent us from making mistakes but help us debug faster.

OKR 2021

Filed under: Real — liyiwei @ 3:45 pm

For OKR 2020, I rated myself 80 percent:

  • Published 2 top papers with 2 student first authors.
  • Contributed to a newly released motion brush feature in Adobe Fresco, and received 6 granted and 4 filed patents.
  • I am relieved some of my management duties (for now) after my last direct report became a professor in NYU.
  • I have yet to start top impacts.
  • The creative practice (mainly drawing and animation) has heightened my sense of observation and can help me focus/relax into a zone similar to meditation.
I finished Quicksilver, the first volume of the Baroque Cycle, my yardstick for book reading.

The default period is from July 2021 to June 2022 unless stated otherwise.

Twenty years living
near Pulgas water temple
first visit today

You can hear, from the sound I recorded onsite, the energy of the water flow 160+ miles from Hetch Hetchy, an engineering marvel that, via gravity, supplies 85 percent of drinking water to the SF Bay Area.

A fly around a bowl of noodles

Google Lens classified the wheat noodles as shirataki probably due to the shiny, translucent appearance.

Hive mind shrank human brains

Filed under: Real — liyiwei @ 11:15 am

According to this Economist Expresso article, human brains started to shrink about 3000 years ago possibly due to living in social groups where the collective intelligence reduced the need for individual brain powers/activities (known to be energy consuming).

Which implies that loners today might be in relative evolutionary disadvantage compared to team-workers today and loners 3000 years before.

Immigration policy

Luck and coincidence put us inside of the border, separating those who might be smarter, tougher, and no less deserving to be here.

Impression of a museum guard

In a quiet Saturday afternoon when there were more guards than visitors in a recently re-opened art museum, I observed the unique combination of facial mask and head wrap of a particular guard who paced around me.

This is one of my most favorite paintings in the Anderson Collection.
