Today’s wrongs

There were values and practices that people used to take for granted only turned out to be bad or evil later.
Examples in the specific realm of people include race (slavery, genocide), sex (women, and more recently LBGTQIA, rights), religion (more people have died in the name of God than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao combined), etc.

Which made me wonder: what are the values and practices that we take for granted (or consider to be normal) today will likely to become flipped in the future?

One immediate answer that came to my mind is the expansion of legal/ethical protection of people towards biological creatures and natural habitats, due to the increasing awareness of climate change and environment degradation.
For example, maybe one day we will have legislation that gives all (multi-cellular) animals and plants the same rights to live as humans so that killing them will be considered as murder, or dumping garbage into a river, ocean, or landfill is like littering your neighbor’s yard.
Would that make a better future world?

Dream recording

After a semi wake-up earlier this morning I recalled a lot of interesting thoughts going on during my dream, including two research ideas (one shared with my collaborator right before writing this and another needing more thinking), a visual image of an abstract cabinet drawer, and a scene of my mother at a bus stop seeing me off to a military service.

At that moment, I pondered whether I should write these down with potential sleep disruption or continue lying down with potential risk of forgetting everything later.
Apparently this pondering made enough imprint in my memory so that, even after opting for the latter, I could still recall everything.

PS:
Most of my ideas came from my day/night dreams, apparently during relaxed rational inhibition.
Thus I always try to keep healthy and consider stress a risk factor for both my life and work.

A soothing process

Upon receiving the weekly food delivery I found out a bag of farro has been split open spilling the grains all over the box.
Usually such incidents will trigger a short bout of anger release (e.g., cursing), but (to my surprise, probably due waking up from a better-than-average sleep) I just gathered the grains via a sequence of containers of decreasing sizes and found the whole process very soothing.

Justice and human-rights issues aside, wouldn’t it be more economical to repossess the home and such?

I usually ignore inquiries (such as students seeking internships or recruiters on LinkedIn) that are obviously auto-generated with spammy, generic, robotic descriptions. If you want me to reply you in person, ask me in kind.

When I was a kid my parents were very persistent in nudging me towards the desired behaviors.
Recently I have applied the same persistence in nudging them for taking covid vaccines.

Where did you come from?

Since my arrival at the US in 1996 I have been asked the same question many times: where did you come from?
Most of the inquirers were benign, especially those also from other countries.
For probably once or twice that were otherwise, my response was simply asking the same question back: where (the f***, via facial expression) did you come from?

Except for native Americans, we were all coming from different places, just at different times.

This app recommends across a variety of mediums such movies, books, and podcasts.
I am not sure how good its algorithm is, but I do wonder how it competes with individual platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, and Apple/Android podcasts with both the content and the recommendation in place, which are much more convenient to provide preferences and reviews.
The notion recommendations from people you trust can also be achieved from existing social networks such as Facebook and Nextdoor.
