Qualification filter

When they just arrived they thought it tough to publish at least one first-authored SIGGRAPH paper before graduation.
Now they are hitting the job market and found out that some topic research lab (not to be named but this is no secret) requires at least 5 first-authored SIGGRAPH papers.

Birds of a feather flock together.
Your opinions of others often reflect more of who you are than who they are.

I would like to thank those who (unintentionally) help me filtering away unqualified candidates; you might be even more effective than what the good folks could do.

Contact for job applications

Filed under: Real — liyiwei @ 7:25 pm

Having a middleman who knows well both the job applicant and the hiring manager can help a lot, compared to submitting and examining job applications in the dark.

However, if I were the hiring manager, I would prefer the candidate to contact me directly (and cc/mention the reference in the email). This is more direct and sincere; the job is between the candidate and me, not the reference. And I can ask the reference for more information if I need.

Background: After sending out a job inquiry email on behalf of a candidate, I realized this is probably not ideal as I recalled my corporate days.

Coding interviews

Some good answers can be found in these social network links.
In a nutshell, preparing can improve interview performance, even though coding interviews might not correlate well with real coding skills (that would be needed for jobs).

hou hou hou mu mu

I saw someone with huohuohuomumu as the email alias.

Initially I thought it was some laughing sounds, like wo ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha or something.

But then she told me her first name is 焱林 in Chinese.

PS: I always find it charming to see a female with a masculine name.

Paper acceptance rate

Filed under: Real — liyiwei @ 6:58 pm

Since HKU asked for this and resumes do not usually contain failures, I reckon it could be a good idea to share my paper acceptance rate.

For SIGGRAPH (the top venue for computer graphics and interactive techniques, in case you don’t know), my life-time acceptance rate is 36%, and 40% in the last 5 years.

As a milestone of seniority, I couldn’t recall how many SIGGRAPH papers I have until doing this calculation.

I am not keeping track of my submissions to other venues (such as CHI, UIST, I3D, TVCG, EGSR, etc.), but I am pretty sure the overall rate is at least 50%, and much higher for some venues, such as EGSR (100%).

For reference, the overall acceptance rates of many graphics venues can be found under
