Road accident

This is an imaginative drawing inspired by a real event.

I tried to finish it within the time constraint at the end of a long day so I did not spend much time on the less important details, such as the dent at the front of the car that would add more dramatic effect.

Met invitation envelope

I don’t know why a museum in NY would want to invite someone living in CA to be a member – maybe there are CA folks who spend weekends in NY?
But the photo on the envelope did give me some visual idea about how things might move there.

After conducting some research in visual perception I went to an eye institute for potential bugs in my visual system.

Acquitting myself fromContinuing review duties for a venue

During a recent gathering people have talked about how some of my works have been unfairly treated.
Beforehand I was actually not aware of the situation, in any case these are already published works for everyone to judge, and I don’t see how it could have any tangible impacts on my life and career at this stage.

However, since now it has been brought to my awareness, I feel that I should do something about it for the sake of sportsmanship, as it does not seem proper to leave it as is.
Thus, I have decided to stop reviewing duties for that venue until the situation is remedied.

As far as I remember I have never turned down review/committee requests (aside from potential conflicts) and I am pretty sure I have done my fair share of services for that venue even if I stop right now.
If I want to continue volunteering my time for a cause, I need to know it is at least fair.

Update: I realized that the decision was made by a few individuals who do not necessarily represent the whole community, and in any case this event seems quite insignificant in retrospect. Plus I still enjoy reading and discussing about research, so I have yet to turn down any paper review and committee invitations so far.

Mapping a dog’s mind

Sitting a dog named Chewie, whose mind I tried to map as the following state machine:

Follow me around within 3 feel and eye sight.

Rest over a soft surface whenever possible (especially his beds which I can put where I want him to be).

Eat and drink when inside.

Pee and poop when outside.

Sleep, other than the above.

Saw these two cars damaged and piled together inside a cordoned parking area, and wondered how they ended up in such a configuration and why.

Training weak muscles

For physical exercises we were told not to hurry through difficult parts as these indicate our weak spots that we need to work on more thoroughly.

This applies to mental exercises as well.
I used to avoid tasks that I don’t like, but now I reflect on the underlying reasons and do these for the sake of training my mental weak spots.

Know what you want for your life

A friend of friend, asking for career advice, said that he/she knows only what he/she does not want to do but not what he/she wants because he/she is used to do what being told.

If you do not know what you want for yourself, nobody else is going to figure that out for you. And even if they tell you, it is for them, not you.

Our education system is focusing more on technical than the much more important life skills, such as how to interact with other people, how to live a happy life, how to manage emotions, etc., which we tend to learn in an ad-hoc way.

I am not sure about the first part, but I do agree with the second part.
